Doing business in Costa Rica, the happiest country in Latin America and fourth worldwide

Costa Rica is the 4th happiest country in the world and the only Latin American nation to break into the top 5 for the first time, reaching the highest position ever recorded for a country in the region. This is according to the recently published 2026 World Happiness Report by international firm Gallup©.

This historic milestone adds to other global benchmarks such as the Happy Planet Index, the Better Life Index, and the Social Progress Index, where the country also stands out for its quality-of-life indicators.

¡Pura Vida los ticos! They’ve figured out that economic growth and social well-being go hand in hand.

Beyond advanced economies, some countries stand out for offering something even more valuable: well-being. This is a combination of social, economic, and cultural factors that not only shape the quality of life of their people, but also create a highly attractive environment for investment and business development.

But can business opportunities really be linked to a country’s level of happiness? The answer is yes and its business ecosystem proves it.

A small nation with high levels of happiness

In a global context shaped by economic uncertainty, geopolitical conflicts, and social stress, Costa Rica stands out as one of the most stable countries in Latin America, building a reputation for innovation, sustainability, and social development, key elements that define everyday life.

This reflects how a country of just over five million people, with a land area of 51,100 km² (0.03% of the Earth’s total surface), has turned stability into more than just a macroeconomic indicator, it’s part of daily life.

The perfect blend of business and well-being

The report gave Costa Rica a score of 7.4 after evaluating metrics such as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. However, there are other factors that make it a safe bet for doing business.

Globally recognized for its political and institutional stability, legal certainty, and tax incentives in free trade zones, the country serves as a key gateway for companies looking to expand into Central America and the rest of the continent. In 2025, foreign direct investment reached US$5.121 billion, with the medical devices sector leading growth at 7.1%.

At the heart of this success are strong trade agreements with the United States, the European Union, Mexico, Canada, China, and Central America, providing a reliable bridge for companies to invest, grow, and expand into the world’s most important markets over the long term. This is supported by solid logistics infrastructure, with major ports in Moín and Caldera, and international airports in San José and Liberia. PROCOMER reported that, as of January this year, exports totaled US$1.512 billion—US$41 million more than in January 2025 (+3%).

This growth is part of ongoing efforts to streamline regulations, strengthen infrastructure, and enhance trade security, as reflected in the Global Business Complexity Index (2025), which ranks the country 58th out of 79 jurisdictions, making it easier for foreign companies to operate and fostering economic diversification.

It’s worth noting that Costa Rica’s strong culture of sustainability and environmental protection has positioned the country as a leader in Latin America’s energy transition in the region, thanks to an electricity system powered by 99% renewable sources and its decarbonization strategy creating an ideal environment for companies focused on green and sustainable operations.

All of this economic momentum would not be possible without its 2.3 million professionals and a literacy rate of 98%, ensuring a highly educated and committed workforce, and fostering more collaborative, less conflict-driven environments. In other words: a happy country works better, too.

Tourism: the essence of Costa Rica’s “Pura Vida”

In Costa Rican life, the tourism sector deserves special mention. Beyond the numbers, the concept of “pura vida” reflects a culture rooted in warmth, solidarity, and optimism, an expression of the country’s national identity. Its beaches, tropical forests, and a way of life that values well-being, environmental conservation, and community connection all represent its authenticity, its deep respect for nature, and the pride of being home to 6.5% of the world’s biodiversity.

The tourism industry reached a historic US$5.5437 billion in 2025, according to data from the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR), and more than 2.9 million international visitors entered the country, consolidating the sector as the leading generator of foreign exchange.

What else makes Costa Ricans happy?

Succeeding in Costa Rica requires a deep understanding of its national context. The ability to achieve measurable results comes from turning that insight into strategy.

There are key social indicators that help explain why it is considered one of the happiest countries in the world:

  • Costa Ricans enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the Americas, thanks to universal and free access to healthcare and education.
  • Life expectancy stands at 81 years, including regions like Nicoya—globally recognized as a Blue Zone—where many residents live well beyond 100. This reflects a deep connection to well-being, balance, and community.
  • With 92.6% internet penetration, reaching 4.78 million users and 4.06 million active social media profiles (78.7% of the population), the country offers one of the most connected markets in Latin America.
  • The nation has also established itself as an attractive destination for high-net-worth individuals. According to the Henley Private Wealth Migration Report 2025, around 350 millionaires are expected to choose it as their new home, positioning the country as an important global wealth hub for those seeking financial security, tax advantages, and legal protection.

These factors show that happiness is no longer an abstract concept, it becomes a tangible competitive advantage: it attracts talent, builds customer loyalty, strengthens reputation, and creates environments that are more conducive to innovation.
